Winthrop Manuel Holcombe was born in Asheville, North Carolina on November 25, 1928, to Hugh Carrol Holcombe, Sr. and Matilda Ann McClain. He lived with his grandparents and attended South Asheville Elementary School up until the 4th grade, when his grandmother died. He then moved to Newark, NJ to live with his mother, who owned a restaurant there. Manny McClain, as he was called, attended both Monmouth and Miller Street Schools before going on to Central High School. Manuel joined the Air Force, becoming an electrical technician and was in charge of the flight line, fueling planes and in charge of its trucks and drivers. Upon completion of his tour of duty, he married Matilda Janet Beverly on June 13, 1948. The couple relocated to Neptune, NJ, where they would raise 4 children. Manny would join the National Guard, serving for over 25 years before retiring as an Army Sargent First Class. He was an owner operator for Wakefern Food Haulers for many years, and owned several businesses in NJ before retiring to his hometown of Asheville, N.C., then finally moving to his father’s hometown of Spartanburg, S.C. Manuel was predeceased by two brothers – Hugh C. Holcombe, Jr. and David P. Russ, Jr. He leaves behind to celebrate his life his loving wife of 68 years, Matilda Janet; children Joanne Spencer, Michelle Williams, Nancy T. Quarles, and Manuel W. Holcombe; grandchildren Samuel, Jr., Josiah, and Susanna Spencer; Vernon L. Taylor and Chanelle M. Brown (Jabali); Cory W. Martin, Felicia Thompson, and Dana Quarles; great-grandchildren Shania C. Porter and Marissa Simpkins; godchildren Joseph Fred Stewart, Hadi (John) Muhammad, James King, and Steven Rembert; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. |
