LIFE PROFILE
Loving, caring, kind and sarcastic was our dear Nadine. She was a phenomenal, one of a kind mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend.
Her amazing life came to an end March 21, 2020, at home surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren.
She was the fifth of eight children of the late Charlie and Marietta Higgins Stephens. She was proceeded in death by her sister, Queenie S. Woodruff of Spartanburg, SC, and four brothers, Grover E. Stephens of Woodruff, SC, Percy R. Stephens of Woodruff, SC, Robert E. Stephens of Brunswick, NJ, and Alar C. Higgins of Hyattsville, MD.
Nadine graduated from New Bethel High School in Woodruff, SC. After graduation she pursued nursing in Columbia, SC. She later married Stinson Smith of Spartanburg, SC and they had two children Tiawana and Tracy. She worked for Phillips Fibers and retired from Phillips Performance Pipe in Startex, SC after 24 years of service. But, not content with retirement she went back to work at Spartanburg Regional where she retired again after 5 years of service. After retirement some of her favorite activities were playing Senior Bingo at local restaurant’s, traveling anywhere her daughter Tiawana would go and testing all the new entrees and dessert recipes her daughter Tracy would cook. A few of the most special men in her life were Wayne Brady, Drew Carey and Stephen Colbert. Her adoptive grandson, Dominique who she loved dearly, was by her side until the end.
She loved attending the rodeo with her son-in-law John and watching sports with her son-in-law Preston. She loved hard, laughed hard and when her health allowed, she played hard. She adored her grandchildren and always put them before herself. She enjoyed watching her favorite shows with Zabrisha and Brittany, playing Bingo with Heather and going out to eat with Zavie. She enjoyed getting her nails done by Shakya and watching Dominique cut a rug.
She will be missed by those who loved her most as she leaves behind two daughters; Tiawana R. (Preston) Smith-Browning and Tracy N. (John) Jackson, both of Spartanburg, SC; Six grandchildren; Zaveria Smith, Zabrisha Smith, Brittany Davis, Heather Brewton and Shakya Cohen and Dominique Lennon, all of Spartanburg, SC. Also a special grandson Antione Bland of Spartanburg, SC. She also leaves behind two maternal aunts; Rev. Deborah H. (Bennie) Williams of Woodruff, SC and Mrs. Bernice H. Goode of Charleston, SC; two brothers; Lewis W. (Catherine) Stephens of Charlotte, NC and Fred O. (Mary) Stephens of Greer, SC; Two Sister-in-laws, Wilma Stephens of Waxhaw, NC and Lillie Ruth Stephens of Woodruff, SC. As well as a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, family and friends.
